How to Build a Cedar Rail Fence

Fences are indispensable structures for any property as they keep the area hidden from public view and, more importantly, define boundary lines. If constructed from high-quality material, fences can also enhance the beauty of your home.

One of the most cost-effective fences that you can have installed is a cedar rail fence. A cedar rail fence is ideal if you prefer a warm and rustic ambiance to your property. There are different sizes and shapes of rails and posts to choose from. Find the specific model you need. Cedar rail fences are also used to rein in horse and livestock.

A cedar rail fence can be easy to install if you know the techniques. To keep the dirt compact around the cedar rail fence post during the process of backfilling, a tamping bar should be used.

Especially challenging for the do-it-yourselfer are the large cedar wood gates. Large gates are outfitted with a custom-welded galvanized tubular frame on which the wood is mounted. Since wood, as a building material, has its limitations, a cross brace is preferably installed to help prevent sagging in smaller-sized gates (for pedestrians). These are entirely made of wood, and are available in widths of 3', 4' and 5'.

Always check posts and rails for plumb after the ground significantly settles in order for the cedar rail fence to remain upright. This is especially important if the cedar rail fence has been installed on a wet area. In addition, to help prevent the posts from giving way under the rails' heavy weight, gravel is poured around the posts instead of dirt backfilling.

Cedar rail fences are surprisingly resistant to rotting and infestation by insects, making it one of the most durable wood fencing materials. Cedar rail fences are also relatively easy to install yourself.

Cedar rail fence gates typically hang on sturdy red cedar posts accessorized by wood gate hardware, which are sold separately. The prices for these cedar wood gates are found with all the other materials used for western red cedar.
