Why Use Wire Meshes for Split Rail Fences?

Split rail fences are fences that usually have large gaps between the rails and thus are ineffective in keeping small intruding animals out and domesticated pets and children in. This is the reason there is a need to install wire mesh fencing made of galvanized wire. This mesh is rust resistant, highly visible and does not require excessive maintenance. The openings in the wire mesh are small enough to prevent horses' hooves from stepping through, making it perfectly safe. The mesh will simply spring back to its original shape when stepped on, effectively protecting the animals from harm and minimizing the need for repairs.

Split rail fences are most commonly used in farms and as enclosures for livestock. Split rail fences are also used as decorative additions to residential and commercial properties. Available in two-rail or three-rail models, split rail fences can also be installed along ranch or range boundaries and golf cart paths.

Where are split rail fences used?

1. Golf cart path boundaries; 2. Corrals for horse; 3. As containment systems for livestock; 4. To define boundaries; 5. As decorative landscape additions.

Using split rail fences for farms

Split rail fences that are made of wood are the natural choices for farms and ranches. Wooden split rail fences blend naturally with the environment and are perfect installations to secure cattle and horses. It is important to allow the horses to run free in an area spacious enough, and at the same time restrict their movements within specified boundaries.

The main types of wood used for fencing are cedar and yellow pine wood. These do not come cheap and are more and more getting rare. Southern yellow pine wood is strong and lasts a lot longer when pressure-treated. Eastern white cedar and Western red cedar, both commonly used as fencing for horses, are naturally resistant to warping and rotting. Another good choice for horse fencing is oak, which is both durable and handsomely grained.

Vinyl fencing: a smart alternative

Vinyl as fencing material is an excellent alternative to wood, as it is durable, attractive and virtually maintenance-free. It can withstand the everyday thrashings that split rail fences are normally subjected to, such as horses' leaning and rubbing. However, horses do not tend to crib on split rail fences made of vinyl.

Moreover, vinyl does not splinter, rot or warp, making it a safe choice for horses. Split rail fences made from vinyl can also come in a wide variety of styles and shades and will not fade over time.
